What car, if spotted, would get you the most excited?
I made a post yesterday about how I’d
!!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!!
and mentioned that it was probably at the very top. I love Koenigsegg but I’ve
!!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!!
of those, I’ve
!!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!!
and seen those too. A
nd the Japanese cars I really love are relatively cheap and common, even the rare ones, so I’ve seen plenty of those.
I think the cars you get most excited about are a combination of the car’s rarity, and your own desire. Some cars are extremely rare but nobody cars about them, some cars are very desirable but fairly common. Rarity in your own market helps, like spotting a GT-R in America or a TVR in Australia - both are far more common in other markets.
I’m not sure what’s left on my list.
I’d like to see a Chiron but I’ve seen a Veyron which is...close enough.
R390 road car would be sweet, but there’s only 2 in the world. Cerbera Speed 12 would be good but there are very few of those and none in Australia. CLK-GTR would be rad, going back to the Need for Speed days. An EB110 would be cool, though I actually glimpsed one of those locally once and didn’t bother to get closer - idiot. I don’t think I’ve seen a P1, though I have seen a Senna, and I’m not too fussed for some reason.
Actually, at the top would be McLaren F1. I’m a bit surprised I haven’t seen one, I’ve been to dealerships locally and overseas that have heaps of supercars just sitting around, !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! . And I’ve been to museums too. It’s not super rare in terms of build numbers, but I suppose it is very special.
So yes, if you’re reading this far, my dream spot for now is McLaren F1. What’s yours?

Jaguar C or D type, or a Cunningham. Really anything that raced in that era of Le Mans

A koenigsegg or pagani would be cool but I would probably be equally giddy about a pulsar Gti-r.

If I see an F40 in traffic I will drop whatever I’m doing and follow it to the end of the world.
Also like 30's and 40's stuff is cool right?
![]() 06/09/2020 at 17:45 |

Because it’s a true supercar !

I think the R390 would be pretty high on my list. Also the Lexus LF-A and EB-110. I’ve seen some pretty wild cars in person but in a shop that specializes in those cars - seeing them in the wild is a lot more special, though. C ars like the LF-A, R390, EB-11 0 are either too old or too common in the US for me to see through my “ usual” channels so I’d only ever be able to see them in the wild.
![]() 06/09/2020 at 17:58 |

This was my first thought—never seen one in person. Also had a few model F50s and a poster of one on my wall growing up, and would love to see one up close.

Haha, good call. That one looks to be in Japan.
I’ve seen a few F40s, I think I even saw one in traffic once.
30's/40's is cool to some people. Most of the time when I see it, I don’t know what I’m looking at. I’ve seen a few Citroen Traction Avants, they cool
![]() 06/09/2020 at 18:10 |

Very cool. Hard to spot on the road. There’s a museum near me that had one for a time :) Would be high on my list if not for that.
![]() 06/09/2020 at 18:10 |

Those are cool. I’ve seen one or two, always very exciting.
![]() 06/09/2020 at 18:12 |

The is right. I think there’s one R390 in private hands, and one owned by Nissan. I think the private one has been hidden for decades, so you’ve gotta get yourself to Japan.
When I was in Japan I didn’t see it, but I met a dude who did.
Good point about seeing them in the wild, that’s so much less common. Cars like those spend decades only getting a few hundred kms on them if that - so they don’t spend time in the wild.
There’s an LFA that’s been living at this dealership near me for more than ten years. Wild. I think it’s the only one I’ve ever seen though.

Living in LA, I see lots of cars. But an F1 or F50 is at the top of my list. I saw a Senna driving about 2 weeks ago, but would gladly trade that for the two above

Ooh, interesting take. I’m not so big on racing cars, though I’m sure those had road going versions too. Things were simpler back then

Karenjy is an automobile manufacturer based in Fianarantsoa, Madagascar.
Wow. It’s got nothing on the Merc Popemobile eh

Surprisingly (due to the lack of an automotive social scene here), I have seen a few amazing things on the road here - F40, F50, Enzo, 300SL, 507, Spyker, Countach periscopo, later Countach, prewar big bore Bentleys.
540K would be fun, F1 would be memorable, 288GTO, 959 (saw a parked one years ago), senior model Bugattis, etc.

Also! Chrysler ME Four-Twelve . I think Ludacris has the black one, i t’s been spotted in the wild on a trailer.

Id love to see a Miura, a Dino or a Stratos, but big wallet cars are like big wallet houses. I can walk five or six blocks from my little ranch to see million dollar homes. I get more excited to see a nice Alfa or a Triumph because it says love more than money. Thats just me.
![]() 06/09/2020 at 18:47 |

seen a McLaren F1 (Australia’s only one)
but i’d loves see up clos the Nissan R390 and Toyota GT1

Well nowadays you wouldn’t be able to drive a race car on the street, but these things were street legal which makes it even more awesome. The road going version would’ve been the XK120, but I’ve already spotted several!
The XK120 and Hudson Hornet are my two classic cars that I would love to obtain someday and think are possible with the right amount of saving and investing through the years.
The Cunningham’s are just awesome because it was one rich man doing his darndest to have the US win and show it could race with the fancy europeans

Mine are a little offbeat, but I’ve seen some of them:
Mer cedes 300SL - I’ve seen a roadster , which I like better than the Gull wing
61 Impala SS 409 convertible- also seen
Chrysler 300G convertible
Toyota 2000GT - I’ve seen a few
BMW 507
Ferrari 250 GT California - the holy grail for me.

Pretty sure the F1 would be towards the top of my list but I think the Jaguar XJ220 would put me over the edge. Not because it’s the most badass but because they’re less well known, even though nearly 3 times the amount of F1s we re produced. I like rooting for the underdog.

Woah, I really didn’t think any of those were built except maybe one show car. Were there many?

The XK120 is one that is beloved by a great many people, I’m sure they’re good.
![]() 06/09/2020 at 19:36 |

I’ve been lucky enough to see a 220, very cool. So damn long and low.
![]() 06/09/2020 at 19:38 |

Oh god! I forgot about Spyker. I’d love, love to see one of those. Given the rarity that’s probably almost at the top of my list.
A parked 959? So cool.
![]() 06/09/2020 at 19:39 |

The 250 GT Cali is one that always sort of confused me. It’s pretty, but I’d be hard pressed to say it’s much more or less prettier than a lot of other cars of the era. Yet it’s worth tens of millions.
If I saw one I might not even realis e the gravity of the spot.
![]() 06/09/2020 at 19:40 |
|
Yeah I see what you mean. The Chiron fits that slot for some people, it’s more of a rich man’s showpiece than anything in some ways.
![]() 06/09/2020 at 19:41 |

Just driving around? Man LA sounds like heaven sometimes. Especially all that stuff about no rust and warm weather all year ‘round.
![]() 06/09/2020 at 19:42 |
|
Where and how did you see the F1? I’d like to know more about that. You’d think there might be more, compared to all the other L HD-only supercars that you’d never be able to drive here. Though I’m not sure if being centre driven makes it more or less legal.
I’m getting deja vu, perhaps you’ve mentioned the F1 before.
![]() 06/09/2020 at 19:47 |

I believe there were two.

Yep, driving around, very casually, in one of the nicer suburbia places in my area.
I am a huge fan of the area even with the well known problems
![]() 06/09/2020 at 19:51 |

There are a lot of pretty sports cars from that era. I do think the 250GT is a little prettier, and the sound a Colombo V12 makes beats anything else out there.
But yeah, the prices are insane and I'll never own one. A big Healey would be a way better value.
![]() 06/09/2020 at 19:52 |

Also I just realized ... it had an M120 V12 ... so it was kind of like a Zonda/CLK-GTR ...

The Petersen in LA had the R390 when I was there last September, so if you even go on vacation to America you might be able to see it
![]() 06/09/2020 at 19:54 |

ALSO I just remembered ... I saw the ME Four Twelve show car at the Baltimore Auto Show, like, 15 years ago ...

Ive probably smoked 100 packs of cigarettes in this spot next to our previous owners LFA on our back lot over the years, somewhere I have a pic of a Mclaren next to it.
![]() 06/09/2020 at 20:01 |

The Spyker was cool, been over 10 years since I saw it, but I won’t forget it, . Seemed smaller in real life than in pics.
959 was memorable too - it was at a detail shop. The paint appears matte because it is still wearing the original paint preservative, it had something like 200 kms on it, effectively a new car . I snapped a few pics:

If I saw a Tatra 603, I would probably crash. If I was on foot, I would walk into a lamp post (done that looking at a vintage crane).
![]() 06/09/2020 at 21:42 |

First let me say that it is about 10x more exciting to see a car being driven or parked on the street than seeing one at a show or car event. Combination of the pleasant surprise and seeing a car being used rather than displayed.
Some of my favorites, a 300SL at a little upscale shopping area in Scottsdale. A Berlinetta Boxer going down the road in my hometown. Not overly rare, but not so long ago I saw a somewhat scruffy series one e-type coupe, with some books, mail, a laundry basket, somebody’s daily or at least frequent transportation, sitting at a small city old sports car garage . A TVR Griffith that sat on a lift in the service station down the street from me when I was a lot younger.
What I would love to see, an XKSS or any Pegaso.
![]() 06/09/2020 at 21:49 |

I was thinking 2000gt. Never seen on, but I find it to be one of the all time most beautiful cars built.
Weirdly, the only cars I’ve seen on your list is a BMW 507 and 300sl. Both were seen at the shop next to the one I worked in. One of 4 times I dropped what I was doing to see what they were working on. The other 2 were a 53 vette and an alfa 8c (which had just come out)
![]() 06/09/2020 at 22:02 |
|
The Chevy is really the rarest car on my list, oddly.
I forgot the 8C! I would have listed it.
I’ve seen 3 2000GTs, one of which was one of the roadsters. 2 at the Petersen, one at the Chicago Auto Show that Toyota showed. So all of those were museum pieces, not on the road. They’re stunning - better looking in person than photos imho.
![]() 06/09/2020 at 22:08 |

That they are better looking in person is really saying something.
![]() 06/09/2020 at 22:10 |

I've weirdly seem a senna just driving around the Philly area. It's not a pretty car, but seeing something like that passing normal cars is really a fantastic sight. It looks like it doesn't belong.

F1 was on show at Grand Prix over the years and at motorclassica once or twice
![]() 06/09/2020 at 22:12 |

Also favorite in real life, a Triumph Italia on a trailer when I was driving around in my TR4a many years ago, and a Plymouth Superbird or two just parked on the street in my low rent neighborhood growing up, just 5 year old used cars.
![]() 06/09/2020 at 22:18 |

There are some cars that are just gorgeous works of art as well as functional. The 300SL, 507 and 2000GT aren’t the only cars on that list, but they’re absolutely on it.

Saw your title and immediately the F1 came to mind. I saw one in a museum as a kid and it sparked my love for cars.

Would be so good to see. Don’t let me forget to attend the next Motorclassica, whenever it may be ;)

Great spots both. I’ve seen 959s, but only in museums overseas. LHD cars don’t get to Aus so often.

It’s a childhood fave of mine. I was lucky to visit the Porsche M useum when they were having a special 959 exhibit, which was amazing of course.
The car in the pics was brought here before it was able to be legally registered (reme m ber, we have the stupid 25 year rule) , just stored away waiting. I don’t know what became of it, haven’t seen it at any local events.

I saw a McLaren F1 in London in 1997. It was grey. I was on a tour bus. None of the other people I was with understood my excitement.
I saw a real Dusenberg boattail speedster.
Last year at the Peterson museum I saw an R390, ID-R, Batmobile (1 989), and a ton of Porsches.
I w ould really like to see another F1 and have time to really look it over.

I worked with a guy woohoo had a1962 Impala convertible. I think it was an SS, but not completely sure now.
![]() 06/10/2020 at 03:21 |

Hard agree on the last two although I’d rather see other variants of the 250, the Cali doesn’t do as much for me
![]() 06/10/2020 at 03:57 |

The 62 is very cool, but the 61 SS is very rare, and I've always liked the look of the 61.
![]() 06/10/2020 at 04:00 |

It has a different character than a lot of the other 250s, so I could definitely see having a different preference.
I just love top down driving and will always pick the soft top first.

I can’t say I am a fan of the styling either , but it is always cool to see something like that out and about

That exhibit sounds ace. I too saw a 959 at the Porsche museum, but just the one I think. Maybe two.
Sad
![]() 06/10/2020 at 18:18 |

I’ve been there a few times (brag), I think the exhibit was in 2015. There were road going variants, rally, prototypes, and this which might impress you, a cutaway - not something seen every day:

God that is cool, I wonder how long Porsche have had that sitting around. Are you European or just a very well travelled non-European?
![]() 06/10/2020 at 20:40 |
|
If you go back far enough I am European, but not by current nationality. I just like to travel. Looks like this year is a likely write-off, but maybe next year I can get back there, been a couple years.
Here’s another 959 variant, the Group B prototype - I had a model of this when I was a kid, so it was cool to see. Notice the corner of a styling mock-up peeking in at right:
